Natalie Lukkenaer: Sauti Academy’s founder & Penya’s director has a Bachelor degree in singing/performance and music business. She specializes in voice technique, performance, music interpretation, music theory and music business. Natalie has previously coached H_art the Band, Phy, Elani, Sauti Sol and Bahati among many others and was Sauti Sol’s manager from 2011-2012. She currently manages H_art the Band’s international performances. Natalie has a two year old daughter and loves playing tennis and eating great food in her free time.
Mordecai Kimeu is the lead singer and song writer of H_art the Band has produced a number of hit records, such as “Uliza Kiatu” and “Nikikutazama”. Although his performing career is very busy, Mordecai finds it very important to pass on inspiration and knowledge to the next generation of musicians. At Sauti Academy he teaches the 2nd term students about song writing, band arrangement and performance.
Wakonyo Gachanja is a singer-songwriter and interior designer. At Sauti Academy, she is in charge of the Raw Talent and Sauti za Usoni programs and teaches first term students musical interpretation and voice technique.
Wachira Gatama is known by most as the poet in H_art the Band. But as few might know, behind the limelight, Shira is the driving business force behind the band. At Sauti Academy, Shira works with the 3rd term students on developing their business skills and branding to prepare them for a successful, self-managed career in the music industry.
Nelson Mandela, lead singer of highly acclaimed band Sarabi is our Band, Rehearsal and Performance Coach at Sauti Academy. Before our end of term concerts, he works with the young instrumentalists and singers to prepare them for showtime.
Apart from this team of five, we have worked with great people from the industry, to name a few Eric Wainaina (who invited seven Sauti Academy students to his studio to assist him in recording a demo for his new project) and guest teachers that have included Mzungu Kichaa (Performing Artist from Tanzania), Ian Mbugua (Judge at Tusker Project Fame, singer, actor and teacher), Kevin Samuel (Berklee Graduate & Performing Artist), Jason Okumu (singer songwriter, graduate of Berklee college of music).
